You can read dozens of WWI books and understand the politics and the who/when/why/how of August, 1914, or you can read Liége on the Line of March and know what it was actually like to be there when the German army marched into Belgium to reach France.
This short book is an amazing personal diary kept by Ms Bigelow, an American living in Liége, for her friends and family back home as events unfolded around her from July to November, 1914. Amazing details of personal experiences for both soldier and civilian shine through as the author recounts such events as nursing wounded soldiers after the first battles and a group of German officers proudly informing her and her friends that the German army had captured Paris.
From the descriptions of machine gun-pulling Belgian draft dogs to the black market in The London Times and other newspapers which civilians were willing to pay small fortunes to read, there is something here for anyone interested in Belgium in the Great War or historical narratives.

Although Bigelow's story reads almost like a "cozy catastrophe," it's well worth the read for anyone interested in what it was like in August 1914 Belgium when the continent went to Hades.
