A romance without the lurid details so common today. The characters are wonderfully interesting. I particularly like the twins. The book (from an estate sale) fell apart and pages disintegrated as I read it, so I am thrilled to find it available on so I can read it again.
Quaint, old-fashioned, yet surprisingly fresh; an utterly romantic, classic tale of love. Some may find it a bit cloying, but frankly, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and found words of truth within.
How I love these old books; far more than some of the drivel out now. Yes, the romance is dated, and the people old fashioned, but still a wonderful read. There's even a villain! And the Crosby Twins are just adorable. Aunt Francesca is precious. I would love to know these people...but not the villain. I would not be a lady!
This book was great. I get the e-versions to see if I want to spend the money on the hardback version. I'm glad to have the kindle but I still like holding a book. The story is nice. I like the twins. Trying not to 'spoiler alert' the story. There are three main ladies, four if you include one of the twins. I liked all the relationships. I started reading another Myrtle Reed because of this story but so far I don't like it as much as this one. This certainly isn't a mind boggling read just easy going. If you're looking for light entertainment, look no further.
The storyline was predictable, but it was so very well written I had to read it to the end. On a couple of occasions there was a bit too much detail for my taste, but it didn't overshadow the whole. This was a story of gentility, love, caring, sincerity and honesty that doesn't seem to exist any more...and it's a terrible loss.
The novel follows the lives of Rose and her widowed Aunt, Madame Francesca Bernard, along with young visitor and cousin Isabel, whose lives are changed by the return of an old friend and neighbour Colonel Kent, and his grown son, Allison. Other characters that help shape their lives in significant ways are the Crosby twins, unconventional and uninhibited youths that set society at naught, and an unconventional doctor who specializes in the impossible. Through the limited "wide-scope" descriptions the reader is not sure of the historical setting or even in which decade it's set, but it helps to understand the focus of the story; after all it's about their own little world, and how their own hearts and lives fit together in the tight confines of their town, their garden, their friendships and lives. I read this years ago after purchasing at an antique store. It is a funny and charming romance with a touch of old timey melodrama. I would compare it to the grown up years of Little Women and Anne of Green Gables. I love reading it on a rainy day with a cuppa tea. Do yourself a favor, if you love the book as much as I do, get an antique copy ... it's a truly beautiful book in and out.
